May 13 2008 - Team Merlin – Midwest Sprint Series – NCMP Race Report

The Midwest Sprint Series (MWSS) kicked off its 2008 series with a recent event at the fames New Castle Motorsports Park and plenty Merlin karts and drivers were on hand to take part in the action and bring home the wins.

Saturday action started with the HPV Jr. Lite class, which should be renamed the HPV Jr. Lite Merlin class; as over half the field were piloting Merlin karts. Shawn Sharkey led the way for the Merlins by qualifying third, followed by Cody Humphreys, Shinya Michimi, and Matt Stagl in 6th. In the prefinal, Humphreys and Sharkey wasted no time, getting to the front by the second lap, with Sharkey eventually taking the win. Manufacturer’s Cup standout, Tommy Andersen, rebounded from a disappointing qualifying effort to place fourth. The final saw more great action with Sharkey coming out on top and Andersen redeeming himself with a second place. Humphreys picked up a 4th and Michimi was 5th. Fellow Merlin drivers Nick Stagl and Jeffrey Bartz also picked up top 10 finishes.

Kyle Kalish, Josh Hotz, Joel Jens, and Ben Hewitt represented Merlin in the HPV Jr. Sportsman class. Kalish and Hotz had top 10 qualifying efforts to get rolling. Kalish hung around the top five all day and finished the day in fifth.

The Merlin colors were carried by TJ Koyen, Travis Kosik, and Kristine Daggett in the HPV Lite class with Koyen qualifying second and Kosik fourth. Kosik was able to move up a spot in the prefinal and Koyen held on to second. In the final, Koyen made a serious late race charge, setting fast time of the race, but came up short at the end and was unable to pass polesitter Brandon Adkins for the win. Kosik ended the day third and Daggett sixth.

Tag entries included BJ Anderson, Blake Wankowski, Jake Feder, and Cody Elliot. Anderson posted a time good enough for the front row. After losing a couple spots in the prefinal, Anderson rebounded to a third place finish in the final, with Feder crossing the line sixth. BJ Anderson would also go on to pickup a top five in Sunday’s Tag class.

In Jr. Supercan Heavy, Cody Humphreys blistered the field with his pole qualifying lap. Shawn Sharkey timed in fifth. Nothing changed in the prefinal, but it the final Sharkey gained a few spots, ending up third, but this time it was Humphreys picking up the win for Merlin.

Koyen, Daggett, and Jason Foley also ran Yamaha Medium on Saturday. Foley timed in third with Koyen fourth, and Daggett in sixth. In prefinal action, Koyen quickly redeemed himself and finished first, just ahead of his engine builder Kevin Nelson. For the final, it was all Koyen. He was untouchable the entire race and handily won by over five seconds. Foley got by Nelson at the end to pickup second and Daggett ended up fifth.

Sunday action commenced with the HPV Heavy class, which included Jesse Wirtz, Travis Kosik, Blake Wankowski, and Cale Wyse. Wirtz ended up fifth in the prefinal. Wyse made some progress in the final, crossing the line fifth in his borrowed pink clad MR30 kart.

In the HPV Jr. Heavy class, the dynamic duo of Cody Humphreys and Shawn Sharkey continued to lead the way, with Sharkey qualifying first and Humphreys third. Nick Stagl also had a good effort with a fourth place time. In the prefinal, Tommy Andersen rebounded from his qualifying time to join Sharkey and Humphreys up front. For the final, it was Sharkey coming in second with Andersen, Michimi, and Humphreys in tow.

Jr. Supercan Lite saw one of the newest Merlin pilots, and NCMP local, Robby Seward on the pole, followed by Sharkey and Humphreys; making a Merlin 1,2,3. Things remained relatively unchanged for the prefinal. In the final, it was Humphreys coming out on top again, with Seward picking a fifth in his first MWSS race. Sharkey was the victim of an on track incident, but he rebounded to ninth.

Yamaha Jr. Sportsman is always and exciting class. Joel Jens had the best Merlin qualification with a fifth place time. Ben Hewitt made some progress in the prefinal and would join Jens toward the front for the start of the final. Kyle Kalish came from way back, like a man on a mission and was able to work himself into fourth when the checkered flag fell. Hewitt stayed with it and ended up seventh.

Yamaha Sr. Supercan was covered by Koyen, Wirtz, Foley, and Daggett. Koyen qualified fourth in his first MWSS event as a senior. Koyen and Foley worked together to get to third and fourth in the prefinal. The final was a frantic pace of passing and drafting that had the running order changing several times per lap. Mark Dismore led a draft pack up to Kevin Nelson, who had quietly opened up a substantial lead. Nelson was hung out to dry by the pack when Dismore went inside him with a couple laps to go. Koyen, who had fallen back as far as fifth, was now jockeying for the second position. On the final lap, Koyen led the pack past Dismore and went to on take his second win of the weekend with Jason Foley in third.
